Do the images need to be taken during the contest dates, or can they be from earlier in the year?

Lane, the photo can be from any time and do not need to be taken during the contest

Jess, the iphone category is meant for photos taken WITH an iphone (android and other camera phones can be used as well)

shane, each week starts a different photography genre, so each week you will be allowed to submit a different photo for that genre.

    Can photos be digitally altered?
    • Riley Onyon
      pictureline June 20, 2012 at 9:20 am
Photos can be edited digitally, but are not allowed to be altered beyond removing unwanted elements and cleaning up the photo. The photos should still be seen as natural.

Staff wrote: "Photos can be edited digitally, but are not allowed to be altered beyond removing unwanted elements and cleaning up the photo. The photos should still be seen as natural." So does that mean a composite image would be acceptable or not?

What are the specifications on the entries? Size and resolution? Thanks.
    • Riley Onyon
      pictureline June 20, 2012 at 9:23 am
There are no specific sizes for the entries, but photos should be large enough to be viewed properly. I would suggest a minimum of 500px wide.

"Photos can be edited digitally, but are not allowed to be altered beyond removing unwanted elements and cleaning up the photo. The photos should still be seen as natural." What about HDR images? Should one include watermarks?
    • Riley Onyon
      pictureline June 20, 2012 at 12:03 pm
Andrew, HDR is accepted, and watermarks can be included as long as they are non-invasive and do not detract from the photograph

Does anyone realize that once we upload to Facebook we grant them free, worldwide distribution of our images?? They OWN our work.
    • Riley Onyon
      pictureline June 20, 2012 at 12:02 pm
Josh, The fact that facebook OWNS your image is a misconception. According to facebooks legal terms, you still own your images. What you are granting facebook is a "non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook". All this means is that facebook now has the right to have that photo displayed on facebook. Details are covered in section 2 of facebooks legal terms http://www.facebook.com/legal/terms
    • josh blumental June 20, 2012 at 1:29 pm
I am very, very well aware of that legal contract. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that seems to mean (to me and my IP attorney) that we relinquish all control, rights and ownership to whomever sees, downloads, copies, transfers, re-sells, shares, emails, reposts,or gifts the images. They are allowed to TRANSFER AND SUB-LICENCE the images correct? In other words, they OWN THEM!!! I would dare anyone try fight an infringement that arose from any image that was posted on FB and happened to end up somewhere unexpected. Posting on FB is a free-for all. "Take my work, PLEASE!"
    • josh blumental June 20, 2012 at 1:32 pm
In fact, that very contract was part of my recent 4x1 show. It was one on of the images in my POACHED series. Care to guess why it was there???
    • charles uibel June 21, 2012 at 3:00 pm
put a watermark on it and be grateful for the worldwide exposure

    • Onatopa June 25, 2012 at 8:59 pm
Roro, if you are trying to submit for the Landscapes, that time has apparently past and only voting is now accepted, or that's the way I believe this is working.

Staff wrote: "...a weekly winner will be chosen from the top 5 with the most votes." And then what happens? PictureLine will pick (judge) which image is best out of those 5?? This isn't a contest for people's best photos, but more of a popularity contest. It's a contest to see how many friends you have on facebook and if they are active enough to vote for your photo everyday! I doubt I'll enter again, it serves no purpose.
  15. shreya June 26, 2012 at 3:29 am Reply
I think I will have to agree with you on that. I saw some really great photographs here but they hadn't managed to get more than 1-2 votes. It's really disappointing!

How many pictures can be submitted? This has been asked several times but never answered.
    • Riley Onyon
      pictureline June 27, 2012 at 9:11 am
Sarah, you are allowed to submit as many photos as you would like, but we ask that you be conservative with your numbers. due to the nature of the contest, it is within your best interest to keep your numbers low so you have a more manageable time promoting your photographs.

  18. Deb June 29, 2012 at 4:23 pm Reply
Definitely a "popularity of friends" contest ... nothing to do with talent or skills.
  19. Dan Peters June 30, 2012 at 7:00 pm Reply
How do you go about telling friends how to find your pic so they can vote? Thanks,
  20. Dominique Granger July 2, 2012 at 11:17 am Reply
Hi! I entered the contest but I do not see how to share my picture to get people to vote for it. If I click on my picture, it brings me back to the photo contest main page. Can someone light my lantern? Thanks!

I am very interested as to why there is no response from Staff as to the worthlessness of this "photo contest". As stated by several others, this has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with talent and everything to do with one's number of friends on FB. Why not run a juried contest and stop this juvenile exercise?
    • Riley Onyon
      pictureline July 6, 2012 at 2:40 pm
John, Our summer photo contest series was created as a peoples contest, and as a fun thing for photographers of all skill types to participate in, with the idea that anyone could approach the contest feeling like they could have a chance. That said, we are not negligent to the many frustrations voiced by those looking for a true juried contest, and will be providing a contest for them in the near future.
  22. L'aura B July 6, 2012 at 3:06 pm Reply
It is a popularity contest, but isn't that photography? Half of being successful is marketing. I've seen some mediocre photos taken by great marketers and some great photos overlooked because the photographer was a recluse.
  23. Sherry B. July 8, 2012 at 2:14 pm Reply
Are composites allowed? This question was asked previously, but I could not find the response to it. Thank you.

I must be reading/doing something wrong...how do I submit a photo? The tab for submitting a photo will not open up for me. I have already liked the f/b page.

Joe, the easiest way to get directly to the contest pages is by the links at the end of this article, they will take you directly to the submission form.

    • Riley Onyon
      pictureline July 10, 2012 at 10:01 am
Richard, if you'd like to tell me the details and description of the image i can go in and delete it out manually. Right now only the portrait category is accepting submissions, so if the image is for a different category you will need to wait until the week that category goes live and submit it then.

    • Riley Onyon
      pictureline July 12, 2012 at 2:17 pm
amber. the only way you can edit your description after submission is if you "linked" the photo to your account. it had to be done during submission, and if by chance you missed it we can delete the photo and allow you to resubmit your entry (only if it's still during the submission phase of the contest)

  29. Denita July 18, 2012 at 2:03 pm Reply
Can I enter photos in the middle of the contest and still be in running for the prizes?? The only contest I have entered in is the macro one, cause I saw this whole website and contest too late to enter in the beginning of the contest. If somebody could tell me that would be great, thanks.

I tried to get people from my work to vote, but we were only allowed one vote from our network a day. Is that normal and if so why (just curious on this 2nd part)?

This web page has a button that says "accepting submissions" for pets. I'd like to submit. But when I click on the button it takes me to FB page (which I already like) and the "submit an entry" tab is unavailable. Thanks, Jason

There are several images in the Abstract Category which are not Abstract whatsoever and yet they are winning the popularity/friends/family contest. I went to said persons page and noticed that his friends are using multiple networks to Vote, more than once daily.
