Summer work took him from Alaska to Mexico as an exploration geologist, where his interest in photography grew.
In 1977 Cone spent three years as an "apprentice" in the studios of Los Angeles; assisting photographers Mario Casilli, Peter Turner, Peter Sagara, and numerous other professional advertising photographers, and also working as a location scout.
An interest in aerial photography then took him into the sky, as a flight engineer and navigator in helicopters. Based in Seattle, for the next 8 years Cone spent over 4000 hours in the air studying earthquake faults, volcanoes, and the earth's geology. He is a licensed fixed wing pilot.
In 1987 Patrick Cone returned to photojournalism for Flying Magazine. He wrote and photographed the 1988 Yellowstone Fires for Flying, and since that time has worked on assignment for dozens of magazines, publishers, corporate, and advertising clients. He has authored nearly numerous feature articles for various publications. His work has also appeared in the 1987 and 1989 Communication Arts Photography Annuals.
I really enjoy aerial photography over natural and manmade landscapes, especially geologic events and natural disasters.
In 2008 I travelled to Argentina and the Andes, Portugal and Spain.
I have been a photographer since 1977.
I use the Nikon D3 and D2x cameras, as well as a Phase One H25 back on a Hasselblad body. Lighting by Norman, Broncolor, and Dynalite.
