Filtering In Better Pictures

I have heard it said that photography is not an easy art. Although it is a common art, it surely requires more than mere representation. It requires a point of view, which is a tangible expression of how you feel about what you see. Great photographs are a result of being properly outfitted, being thoughtful and ready to photograph.

As springtime beckons, we prepare to have fun in the sun and photograph those favorite people and place in our lives. Often something as simple as a new filter in front of the lens can make a difference to our images. There are a multitude of filters to fit life’s host of circumstances. A polarizing filter is a simple choice to augment the clouds or embolden the color of children’s uniforms and the landscape. Because of the density of the polarizing filter, one and a half more stops of light is required for correct exposure. Be sure that digital camera settings are selected for 400 ISO, 400-speed film is selected for traditional cameras or a tripod is used for best results.

Some of the factors to be aware of in choosing a filter are the quality and type of anti-reflection coating used in manufacture. The range is from no coating applied, to a single pass, or multi-coated filter. The type of filter glass is significant, especially if you just purchased that new dream lens. Standard, optical and plano-parallel polished optical quality glasses are available to match the lens of your choice. Since filters are added and removed often, look for a quality mounting ring. Brass is the excellent choice for sturdiness and non-binding of the coupling threads, followed by aluminum then steel.

Filters are available to correct for varying color of light sources, tonal corrections in black and white imaging, and simply to protect from fingerprints and splashes. Feel free to check into our large selection on hand. Happy shooting this spring.
