The
Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro
Will Make It’s
Appearance In October
The much anticipated Fujifilm
FinePix S3 Pro digital camera is finally
becoming closer to reality. The
S3 was announced as the replacement for
the successful S2, in February 2004 at
the PMA convention in Las Vegas. At
that time the public was given a list
of features that the camera would contain. Yesterday
(July 28, 2004), in a press release from
Fujifilm Corporation an updated the list
of features and provided actual photographs
to the public.
The Fuji FinePix S3 Pro
represents the culmination of Fujifilm's
professional photography heritage and
continuous commitment to technology innovation. Special
features that will set the FinePix S3
Pro apart from competitors will be Fujifilm's
proprietary Super CCD SR II sensor, new
and advanced image processing technology
and a number of professional controls
developed exclusively for the FinePix
S3 Pro. With knowledge culled from
years of dedication to the professional
photography community, Fujifilm understands
that a quality image is about more than
just resolution, and thus created the
FinePix S3 Pro to bring the digital picture
closer to the film standard than ever
before. Photographers shooting
with the FinePix S3 Pro will experience
greater dynamic range, improved tonal
capabilities, exceptional color balancing
and accuracy and better signal-to-noise
ratios, all factors that contribute to
a colorful, clear and detail-laden picture.
One of the most interesting
of the new details of this camera is
that it includes the ability to change
the 'mix' between the S-pixel and R-pixel
data from the new Super CCD SR II and
hence the captured dynamic range of the
image. [read about Super CCD technology
in the picturelinenews, here: [www.pictureline.com/newsletter/2004/april/fijidigital.html ]. Fujifilm
S3 Pro will also provide a number of
'film simulation modes’, which
we assume to mean a way to reproduce
the look of some of Fujifilm's well-known
films. Film simulation modes include
the F1 Mode, which renders the image
like Professional Negative Film, delivering
soft, wide latitude images that will
be suitable for studio/portrait work. The
F2 Mode will provide a look like Fuji’s
Velvia, which delivers highly saturated,
high contrast images perfect for the
landscape photographer.
The S3 is loosely based
on the Nikon N80 style body and will
use the Nikon lens mounting system. Usable
Nikon mount lenses include the D/G-type
AF Nikkor lenses with all automatic and
manual functions possible. AF Nikkor’s
other than the D/G type will function
in every way except in the 3D Matrix
metering mode. The older F mount,
Non-CPU style lenses will be usable in
Manual mode (exposure meter cannot be
used). The S3 will also feature
the 10-pin Nikon electric remote socket,
a second shutter release situated perfectly
for vertical shooting, dual media slots
for x-D picture cards and CF type II,
a small pop up flash and many more features.
