The Versatile Multi-Directional Head

Take the simplicity and versatility of the good old tripod top ball head then add true ergonomic control and you have the new Bogen / Manfrotto horizontal Grip Action Ball Head model 322RC2.  With a standard three way tilt pan head, three operations are necessary to orient the lens in any given direction.  This new head allows the user to single handedly unlock, move, position and re-lock the cameras stance on the tripod.  The user only has to grip the handle and squeeze to position the camera anywhere within the 180-degree sphere.

While this new horizontal oriented grip head resembles the older model 3265, which was a vertical standing head, this is a new design.  The new squeeze release grip is hinged nearest the ball, much like a bicycle hand break, which seems to provide a more natural hand motion.  With the horizontal orientation of the head the load carrying capacity has been doubled, now up to eleven pounds.  This makes the Action Grip Ball Head suitable for both 35 mm and medium format use.

The horizontal design has also lowered the ensemble’s center of gravity; creating more stability and giving the unit a more solid feel.  The bubble level has also been moved to a more visible position, near the quick release plate safety thumb lock.  With a number of the quick release plates previously installed on various camera bodies and large lenses, the user can swiftly swap and lock various elements onto the grip head.

There is a thumb control friction adjustment on the grip, which allows the user to immediately tighten the grasp on the head’s ball.  The adjustable increase in friction can immediately halt a camera from slipping or tipping down with gravity.

This little magnesium marvel weighs in at only 1.43 pounds and it only sits four inches high above the tripod.  It mounts to the tripod with a standard 1/4-20 threaded connection.  The action head can rotate 360 degrees, move forwards or rearwards 90 degrees from center, and tip sideward 90 degrees plus or minus 3 degrees in any increment.

To compliment this feature-laden grip, an accessory remote control electronic camera shutter release (322RS) may be added.  This allows the user to fire the shutter without even removing their hand from the grip.  Users will also need to acquire the compatible release cable for their camera to complete the connection.

This grip action ball head certainly seems like the right piece of equipment for those inclined towards sports or nature photography.  Both of these pursuits require speed of movement and the versatility of being instantly oriented in any direction.  Complimented by the correct selection of a Bogen / Manfrotto tripod, photographers will sing the praises of the new model 322RC2 Grip Action Ball Head.
