the Canon EOS-1 Ds Mark II Digital Camera
Approximately two years after Canon’s
introduction of its 11 mega pixel DSLR camera,
which stunned the world at that time, a spectacular
update is soon to hit the market. Scheduled
for a November release, the Canon EOS-1 Ds
Mark II, 16.7 mega pixel full-frame camera,
evolves to the top of the DSLR class. In
February, Canon introduced the 8 mega pixel
high-speed champion, the EOS-1 D Mark II. In
August, the 8 mega pixel prosumer EOS 20D
hit the market. With the EOS-1 Ds Mark
II, the trilogy is now complete.
With the introduction of this Canon camera
the ante certainly has been upped. At
16.7 mega pixels, the new 1Ds Mark
II, now becomes the absolute resolution ceiling
for any 35 mm style digital SLR camera. 16.7
mega pixel resolution and 50 MB file size
will now rival the offerings from medium
format cameras, with some distinct advantages. One
big advantage is that of lens power. Canon’s
selection of over sixty available EF lenses,
from 14 mm to 1200 mm, provides a solution
to every challenge imaginable. Four
different focal length macros, three different
perspective control tilt / shifts, a squad
of high-speed telephotos, and an army of
convenient zoom lens including those with
Image-Stabilization are something no medium
format maker has in existence. Since
this camera is full frame there is no lens
multiplication factor needed. This
means you get your wide angle lens to operate
the way they were intended, wide and as marked.
Dual media recording is a new feature for
this camera brought over from the 1D mark
II. Images may be stored on the typical
compact flash / micro drive cards, the newly
offered secure digital card, or both simultaneously. The
system will support FAT 32 for total operation
with memory cards greater than 2 GB, which
may become quite handy. Customized
user settings may also be down loaded to
a memory card and saved or transferred to
a secondary pool or back up camera.
With the implementation of the new Digic
II processor chip set into the 1Ds Mark II,
it will now feature almost instantaneous
(0.3 sec.) turn on to shoot capabilities. The
new chip set also provides a large buffer
for four frames per second shooting for up
to thirty-two jpeg or eleven RAW files. Normal
ISO exposure settings of 100-1600 may be
selected with the addition of 50 and 3200
selectable in the shooting menu. The
flash exposure and metering systems will
also be updated to the new E-TTL II standard
providing distance-linked precision, accuracy
and control for even bright, reflective,
or off center subjects with all EX style
flash units. There will also be a new
higher powered and faster recycling 580 EX
flash unit available, also with a brace of
new features.
For review convenience the 2” rear
LCD resolution has been doubled to 230,000
pixels. It now will have an orientation
sensor so vertically shot images will appear
vertical to eliminate the twisting of the
camera during inspection. The camera
will also contain a new 10x playback zoom
review mode for critical focus examination.

There will also be available a new battery
powered wireless transmitter system available
operating within the IEEE 802.11 b/g protocol. The
transmitter will attach to the bottom and
into the FireWire port of the camera for
a high-speed wireless exchange of images
into any wireless receiving computer and
any new wireless technologies as they become
available. In addition to the FireWire
connector a USB 1.1 connector has been added
to the camera for traditional download communications.
