Canon 20D - They Have Done It Again!

Talk about living in exciting times.  Canon has just released the new EOS 20D, following close on the heels of its professional cousin, the Canon EOS 1D Mark II which was released in April of this year.  The 20D will replace the former 10D model and sports an impressive new 8.2 megapixel APS-C (15.0 x 22.5 mm) CMOS image sensor, designed and manufactured by Canon, coupled with a second generation DIGIC II image processor.  With its improved processor speed, the 20D is the first mid-range digital SLR to offer high-speed continuous shooting.  It will capture images at 5 fps for up to 23 consecutive jpeg frames or 6 fps in RAW.  One of the most exciting things about the 20D is that it has 0.2 of a second start up time and a shutter release lag of only 65 milliseconds.  No more waiting for the pre-flight check, so to speak.  You flip the on switch and shoot, image captured.  This is just the ticket for sports, journalistic, wedding and portrait photographers.  Other features include a top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec., flash sync at 1/250 and the newly improved E-TTL II flash exposure system.  The all-new 9-point AF unit with high-precision cross-type sensor also raises the bar on speed, accuracy and precision in mid-range SLR’s.  The 20D will be compatible not only with the entire EOS system of lenses and flashes, but also with Canon's new EF-S (digital smaller sensor specific) lens line.

Often buying decisions are based on pixel count alone without regard for the remaining features of the camera or how it works in your hands.  Fortunately, the 20D is the best of all worlds.  Weighing in at 3.6 ounces lighter and approximately 12% smaller, itretains the rugged stainless steel chassis and magnesium alloy body covers of its predecessor for outstanding durability.  The 20D continues its impressive list across a wide range of capabilities, which reaches far beyond mere megapixels.  There are too many refinements to point to any particular one that stands out above all the others, but the exciting part is that none of the refinements are there just to make a new model.  Canon has made every aspect of the 20D focused on one purpose: to help photographers make excellent images.  This camera is at the top of the advanced consumer level, but is very professionally outfitted and capable, all at a most reasonable price.

In addition to the EOS 20D, Canon has also announced two new EF-S lenses, which are clearly aimed at the EOS 20D buyer.  The EOS 20D will be offered as a body only or a kit with the EF-S 18 - 55 mm F3.5 - F5.6 lens, which was first offered with the EOS 300D kit.

The new EF-S 10 - 22 mm F3.5 - F4.5 USM
(16 - 35 mm equiv., field of view, 2.2x zoom)

The new EF-S 17 - 85 mm F4.5 - F5.6 IS USM
(27 - 136 mm equiv., field of view, 5x zoom)
