Zion National Park
Meet up at Zion Lodge inside Zion National Park at noon, (a very special stay, right in the heart of the park) and join us for a welcome lunch and short orientation before we check into our cabins. In the evening photograph under the towering Court of Patriarchs with it’s meadows, brooks and reflections in the Virgin River. Dinner is on your own at the lodge or in nearby Springdale. (Lunch)
Rise early and return to Court of Patriarchs for Blue Hour and Sunrise. Watch how the entire scene changes with the different angles of light. A late morning workshops session will allow us to download and see the results of this fascinating lighting exercise. After lunch, strap on your water shoes (provided if you don’t have any), for a hike up the Virgin River into “The Narrows”. Those not up to this somewhat strenuous hike may choose another short hike option in the canyon. (Emerald Pools hike for instance) Free time to photograph or just relax in the stunning setting of the lodge wrap up this day.
This morning we drive the switchbacks into the Upper East Canyon, and watch the sunrise on a sea of red rock formation where we can get our “rock art” on. After a picnic breakfast we’ll explore some petroglyphs, intense fall colors, and then head back down into the canyon for a well deserved mid-day rest. An afternoon workshop at the lodge will allow us to review the previous day’s images. Then grab your tripod for a classic sunset view of The Watchman over the Virgin River. (Sunset 5:30pm) A group dinner will finish this very full day. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Sleep in or shoot sunrise right outside your cabin door before a late breakfast. A final workshop session will review the instruction and images from the week. Checkout at 12:00 noon.
Antelope Canyon extension
If you choose to continue on with the group, we’ll stop for lunch at an American classic cafe in Kanab, UT then continue on Page, AZ, our headquarters for the next few days. After checking into our rooms at the Marriott Hotel, we’ll jump in some private boats and head out onto Lake Powell for sunset then “blue hour” on one of the most surreal lake landscapes in America.
After breakfast we’ll review our images from Lake Powell on screen and offer suggestions for shooting in the slot canyons, then gather our gear for a mid-day excursion into Lower Antelope Canyon. It being one of the most exquisite naturally carved creations, look forward to what people have called a photographic orgy of color and design. After returning to the hotel for reviewing and editing time, grab a snack and the evening will find us at Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River, one of the most dramatic overlooks on the planet. A Mexican dinner finishes off this amazing day. (Dinner)
Enjoy breakfast then we finish off the workshop with our Navajo guided tour in the famous Upper Antelope Canyon. Although this canyon has been more than discovered, being there at the right time, the right day and with the right guide makes all the difference. We’ll arrive back at the hotel and then we’ll wrap up the workshop. Check out and promise each other we’ll be back here next year!
