The EOS 5D's full-frame CMOS sensor records 4,368 x 2,912 pixels-that's 12.8 Megapixels, larger than many other companies' top-of-the-line sensors. The full-featured shot information screen not only provides an RGB histogram, it displays the AF frames used. Magnification to check exposure and critical focus has never been faster. It is also simple to jump quickly in image intervals up to 100. Menus are accessed at the touch of a button, and feature larger, easier to read text than previous models. "Picture Style" settings simulate the characteristics of different film styles, including Snapshot mode, for punchy, print-from-the-camera color, Portrait mode, for softer, more natural skin tones; Landscape, for vivid blues and greens and overall sharpness, plus Neutral, Faithful and Monochrome, which can be customized to emulate color filters with black and white film.

In addition to 9 different AF points for locking focus on subjects, even if they are not in the center of the composition, the EOS 5D features 6 Supplemental points around the center AF point which help to ensure an even greater degree of focus accuracy when tracking a moving subject. This feature is significant for sports photographers, as well as anyone who needs to keep focus locked on an unpredictable subject. The Supplemental AF points are not displayed in the viewfinder, and they cannot be manually selected. However, they are used in AI Servo AF mode when the EOS 5D is set for automatic focusing point selection, and also when the center focusing point is selected together with Custom Function 17-1.

Flash Photography
The EOS 5D features Canon's E-TTL II flash metering system introduced with the EOS-1D Mark II. E-TTL II provides consistently accurate flash exposure from shot to shot. Canon's Speedlite 580EX and 430EX are perfectly suited to the EOS 5D. They include an AF-assist Beam, which works in conjunction with the EOS 5D's focusing system, and automatically sends color temperature information to the camera when the flash fires, for more accurate color rendition with flash photography.
Additional Accessories
In addition to Canon's EF lenses and EX Speedlites, several other accessories are designed to work specifically with the EOS 5D. The Battery Grip BG-E4 adds a vertical shutter release, and is compatible with up to two of Canon's Lithium-ion battery packs, or alternatively a set of six AA-size batteries, for increased shooting capacity and greater convenience when traveling.
Data Verification Kit DVK-E2
Canon's Data Verification DVK-E2 is an option for the EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS-1D Mark II N, EOS 5D and EOS 20D. Like its predecessor, this kit can verify whether or not a photo is an untouched original. Its use of a Secure Mobile (SM) card reader, instead of an IC card reader, makes it more compact and affordable than the previous version.

| Pros: I sold my 20D on Ebay and purchased a 5D along with 3 L series lenses. The difference from my 20D was very noticeable. The full frame shutter gives you a much wider angle picture and the better quality lenses make my pictures very clean and crisp. With the 12.8 megapixels you can crop your pictures way down and still get a superb quality 8X10. Be aware that the learning curve for this camera is more intense than the 20D because it does not have the preset sports, landscape, portrait etc. features. It does have fully automatic but there is no pop up flash so if you try to take a picture in low light the shutter speed is to slow for a picture without a tripod. An aftermarket flash is a must. I wanted to be a better photographer and this camera forced me to learn more than just point and shoot. This is an excellent camera and I highly recommend it but without good lenses you will be wasting your money. Cons: Bulkier and heavier than the 20D. No pop-up flash. This camera came with a $660.00 rebate. If you buy a lens too the rebate doubles from $330.00. Be prepared to have a major hassle with the Canon rebate center. Make sure you make duplicates of everything they want you to send in for the rebate. I sent everything in one envlope and received a card from Canon saying they were missing one UPC code a receipt and a warranty card. It took 2 months of fighting with Canon to get my money but $660.00 is a great rebate. Good luck | |

| Pros: If you're looking for the best images possible without going to a Mark II this is the camera for you. I've done 16x20's that look great and could probably go even larger Cons: When you shoot a wide angle shot with a fast lens (f/2.8) you get barrell distortion. This appears to be a problem with full frame cameras in general. Other Thoughts: The high ISO (3200) is also incredible. | |
