Better Than Bicubic
When scaling an image to a higher resolution, regardless of the method used to increase the resolution, new pixels are created. The scaling method you use determines the color value of the new pixel. The better the scaling method used, the better your image looks as it is scaled up.
You have several choices for increasing the size of an image in Photoshop, but the most common method used is the Bicubic method. The Bicubic method samples one pixel and then looks at the surrounding pixels to determine the color value of the new pixels created. Bicubic produces smooth tonal gradations when scaling an image.
Genuine Fractals takes a larger sampling and examines the color values in that range. It then makes an informed decision on what the new color values should be when the image is scaled. By taking a larger color value range than standard Bicubic, Genuine Fractals is able to produce scaled images that are more true to the original image.
