Bounce flash photography may be difficult to master, but the Speedlite 470EX-AI takes the guesswork out with its incredible AI Bounce function*. By calculating the optimal bounce angle and moving itself into place, the Speedlite 470EX-AI can determine both the appropriate camera exposure and flash output for beautiful and natural photography. The bounce settings you’ve selected can also be automatically maintained when switching from horizontal to vertically oriented compositions, helping you stay ready for the ideal shot.

Master Bounce Flash Photography with Ease
AI.B Full-auto mode helps make bounce flash photography fast and easy by taking the guesswork out of setting up and automatically creating a brilliant light source for the situation at hand. First, it fires a preflash to calculate the distance from the flash to the subject, then points the flash head up to determine ceiling height up to 23 feet. Using this information, the Speedlite 470EX-AI determines the optimal bounce angle and exposure parameters before moving itself into an ideal position to capture just the right amount of illumination.
How Does Canon's AI.B Full-auto Mode Work?
1- Press the AI Bounce Button.
2- The Speedlite 470EX-AI will automatically measure the distance to the subject, then turn the flash head up to calculate the distance to the ceiling.
3- Using AI Bounce, the Speedlite 470EX-AI will automatically position itself for the optimal bounce angle.
Push Your Bounce Flash Creativity Further with AI Bounce Semi-Auto
For seasoned flash photographers, the AI.B Semi-auto mode can maintain the specified bounce angle when the camera's orientation is changed. This means you can store the bounce angle you’ve defined in the flash’s memory, and can direct the flash to recreate that angle when switching between vertical and horizontal compositions. Registered bounce settings are then easily restored by simply pressing the shutter button twice. AI.B Semi-auto can be a huge time saver, enabling you to focus on the your subject and composition without having to return to flash settings every time the camera’s orientation changes. It also lets you experiment with creative lighting, such as bouncing the flash off the wall, while still providing beautifully natural results.
How to Use AI Bounce Semi-Auto
1- Press the "ANGLE SET" button to store the angle.
2- The Speedlite 470EX-AI automatically maintains the optimal bounce angle even when the camera’s orientation or angle of view is changed.
Even if you switch your camera between horizontal and vertical orientation… the Speedlite 470EX-AI will compensate to maintain the optimal angle so you get the results you want.

AF Assist Beam for Low-light Focusing
The Speedlite 470EX-AI is designed to help achieve sharp focus, especially in situations where the camera’s AF system may experience difficulties.
Infrared Beam System
When you need to be more discreet, using the infrared beam can ensure sharp focus by emitting a steady infrared beam toward the subject, even during bounce shooting.
Intermittent Flash
The Speedlite 470EX-AI emits a small series of flashes. Since illumination reaches the entire picture area, this AF-assist beam mode is effective when a peripheral AF frame is chosen.
Flash Angle Range
The Speedlite 470EX-AI has a flexible and wide bounce angle range of up to 120° upward and 180° horizontally. With AI Bounce, angles within this range can be maintained regardless of camera orientation.
Wireless Receiver Function
Off-camera flash is quick and easy with the Speedlite 470EX-AI, which can serve as a receiver unit as part of an optical wireless flash setup at distances of up to 49.2 ft./15m (indoors).
Distribute Light to All Corners with the Wide Panel
The Speedlite 470EX-AI’s wide panel expands coverage even further.
