Introduced in 2019, the Sony PXW-FX9 XDCAM 6K Full Frame Camera Body is the latest iteration of the popular series of interchangeable lens video cameras from Sony. Incorporating technology from the PXW-FS7, Venice Cameras, and the popular A7 mirrorless bodies, as well as feedback from Sony users, the PXW-FX9 represents a combination of technological advances and users' requests seldom seen in the professional video world. The PXW-FX9 is powerful and flexible enough to handle any type of video work.
6K CMOS Full Frame Sensor
The PXW-FX9 uses a full-frame 6K sensor, capable of DCI 4K (4096x2160), UHD 4K (3840x2160), or Full HD (1920x1080) resolutions. This sensor also uses the Exmor R backside illumination technology, providing better sensitivity and noise reduction when in low light. Compared to previous generation super 35mm sensors, the PXW-FX9 and its 6K sensor has more than double the surface area, which will enable wider fields of view and more control over depth of field.
More Dynamic Range
The PXW-FX9 has an amazing 15+ stops of dynamic range, beyond the normal range of human perception. This wide range allows for exposure of the darkest and brightest areas of the frame in a single shot. Combining this range with the 4K 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording helps ensure that the color and exposure is being captured fully, allowing for ultimate creative control and flexibility in post-production editing.
Built-in ND Filter
For shooting situations where changing the f-stop is not possible or ideal, Sony has built in an electronic variable ND filter. At introduction, it was the industry’s first electronic variable ND filter for a full frame sensor available. This can be set manually for 1/4 to 1/128 during shooting to maintain depth of field as lighting conditions change, or to use for creative effect.
4-Channel Audio Input
The PXW-FX9 offers superb audio capabilities with independent control dials for each audio channel. There are two XLR inputs on the camera body, with optional accessories available to add two additional channels. Thanks to feedback from users, Sony has incorporated the channel control as physical dials for all four channels, rather than having to activate the ad-on channels via menu options.
Selectable Frame Rates and Sensor Coverage
With the PXW-FX9, use either the full frame sensor, or shoot in the super 35 mode to match other cameras using the smaller format. This provides ultimate flexibility when shooting with other bodies that do not share the latest hardware of the FX9. Select frame rates anywhere from 1fps to 60fps in 4K, or all the way up to 180fps in 1080. Sony has also announced 16-bit RAW capabilities will be available with later firmware versions when used with the optional RAW extension unit and an external recorder.
Enhanced Hybrid Autofocus
The PXW-FX9 uses a new hybrid autofocus system that combines phase detection for fast, accurate subject tracking, and contrast detection for exceptional focus accuracy. There are 561 dedicated autofocus points which cover 94% of the image area, making the autofocus both fast and reliable. This hybrid system was developed by Sony’s Alpha series camera engineers, and also includes face detection, eye detection, and focus touch control, making it the world’s best autofocusing full frame cinema camera to date.
Sony E-Mount Lenses
The PXW-FX9 uses the advance E-mount lever-lock to mount all E-Mount lenses. Experience smooth, responsive autofocus combined with premium optical performance when using Sony lenses. The lever-lock mount provides an added level of security for lenses when mounted to the camera.
