Illume - A Heather Nan Workshop

I have always been a firm believer in using the best tools for the job. Natural light tells an impeccable story and we all love it, but sometimes, it just isn't enough. Over the years, mastering artificial light has afforded me all the tools I need to tell a full visual story, no matter the circumstance.

Illume is truly a unique workshop experience… it offers you the rare chance to practice working with the often misunderstood and misused medium of artificial light, with me, to help you every step of the way, offering feedback, support and guidance. We will be walking through all the events of an entire wedding reception. From the first dance to the grand exit, we will physically go through these discussing both bounce flash and off camera flash. I will walk through what I do, as well as giving you the opportunity to practice troubleshooting these events in real time, with real set-ups in a real venue with real couples. It's like totally real. Illume offers a solid foundation from which to work effectively with artificial light. With this knowledge base you will be able to use those techniques and establish your own signature and style.

Over the years I have spent a lot of time second shooting weddings in order to have opportunities to experiment with artificial light. Without taking the time to second shoot other weddings, practicing these techniques are not feasible to do on your own clients. And even if you do get opportunities to second shoot, you don’t get the chance to troubleshoot... to try that again and figure out why it didn’t work or why it did. Illume gives you JUST THAT.

If you do not own speedlights or pocket wizards, don’t fret. Pictureline will be on hand to provide the equipment you will need. As a hybrid shooter I am grateful that The FIND Lab will also be there to discuss film applications, such as the best low light stocks and pushing film. Lastly, Mastin Labs has graciously provided me with a give away of one full set of presets, including their new Kodak pushed presets!

But really, let's be honest. Being able to actually practice all of this in a realistic reception environment, (and not on your stuffed animals at home), is the clincher. Save yourself a TON of time sorting through online tutorials and get yourself some hands on experience.

Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to learn how to make artificial light work for you every single time. Good photographers can shoot in pretty light… Great photographers can make it work in any light.
