Lighting Essentials: Get to Know Your Light

📅 Saturday, October 11th, 2025

🕙 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon

Photography quite literally means “drawing with light.” It’s the foundation of every image you create—and knowing how to shape, control, and enhance that light transforms your photography from snapshots into intentional art. In this hands-on class, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how to work with light—not just as a necessity, but as your most powerful creative tool.

Available Light

Every location offers unique lighting challenges. Learn how to read and work with the light that’s already there—whether it’s window light in a dark room or harsh overheads in a gym. We’ll break down the qualities of natural and ambient light, so you can adapt, react, and elevate your photos in any setting.

Continuous Light

Ready to take more control? We’ll show you how to build on available light by introducing continuous lighting sources. You’ll explore off-camera LED panels and modifiers to see how subtle shifts in direction, intensity, and diffusion can completely transform a scene.

On-Camera Flash

Ditch the pop-up flash and unlock the potential of Speedlights. Whether you’re using full manual control or TTL automation, we’ll guide you through best practices for on-camera flash to bring energy and clarity to your images—without looking “flashy.”

Light Modifiers

From soft and dreamy to bold and dramatic, modifiers are the secret to shaping light to match your creative intent. We’ll cover essential tools like softboxes, umbrellas, diffusers, and reflectors, and how each one changes the mood and feel of your image.

By the end of the class, you’ll walk away seeing light differently—with the skills and confidence to use it deliberately, creatively, and effectively. Whether you're working with what's around you or bringing your own light to the scene, you'll be ready to paint with light like never before.
